Restarting a nursing degree you stopped

Restarting — the direct answer

The single most valuable thing you have is credit already earned, and the most common mistake is enrolling somewhere new without having it formally evaluated first. People routinely surrender a term or more of completed work simply because nobody assessed it before they signed. An evaluation is free and it is the first thing to do, ahead of any application.

Why this happens so often

Restarting usually follows something difficult — illness, money, caring responsibilities, a programme that did not suit. The instinct is to get moving again quickly, and a school that says "just apply and we'll sort the credits out" is telling you what you want to hear. Credits sorted out afterwards are credits you may end up paying for twice.

Do this first

  • Gather complete transcripts from everywhere you studied, including general education
  • Send them for formal evaluation at every school you are seriously considering, not just one
  • Ask for the result in writing, course by course
  • Compare the outcomes — schools differ substantially on the same transcript

What tends to carry

General education usually travels well. Recent science coursework often travels. Older science coursework is the most commonly questioned category. Nursing coursework from an unfinished programme is assessed cautiously and varies most between institutions.

Think about why it stopped

Not as an exercise in blame, but because the same obstacle tends to recur. If it was pace, a compressed 8-week calendar deserves careful thought. If it was clinical scheduling, that constraint has not gone away. If it was money, the route you enter by matters more than any other decision available to you.

You are in a stronger position than you feel

Someone with prior credit and clear reasons for what happened before is a better-prepared applicant than a first-timer. The work is to convert that credit into a written number before committing to anywhere.
